Why 64 Arts?

Yoga (physical & philosophical) became an important aspect of the way I live my life beginning with my very first class as a sophomore in college. I've molded the concept of the 64 Arts as a self-improvement method to best fit my needs over the years. I wouldn't say I have a specific list of 64, but it's important to me in my growth, both personally and professionally, to try new things as well as progress in skills. I've always been a jack of all trades (full phrase: “a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.”), and this context helped me see that as a positive rather than flighty. (Check out the book Range if that idea also appeals to you.)

Some background info: In ancient Indian texts, Artha (the means of making a living) explores striving towards financial security and how that is an important aspect in reaching a fulfilled life. While this pursuit focuses on the ways in which one becomes a financially contributing member of society, the theory goes beyond the material. Also discussed are activities in which people can participate to live a more pleasurable life. 64 arts that improve one’s skills in numerous areas are suggested, traditionally cooking, architecture and languages among many others, though open for adjusting to modern times. These activities coupled with the pursuit of a stable and fulfilling career are vital to the principles Artha outlines for the realization of happiness.

May we all find that balance.
